The Indecisive Fiancée

I’m an idea girl. I love to visualize situations and dream of elaborate events. However, when it comes down to being realistic and coming up with an actual plan I am beyond indecisive. This brings the first problem I’ve come across planning my wedding: coming up with a theme.

So far 5 are on the list. There are two things to keep in mind: it can’t be done to seem in a Disney/cartoony way and it has to be completely new and unique. Keeping in mind how weirdly I plan, I’ve come up with the solution that I think works best. I’m going to be planning 4 possible weddings and eventually begin dropping themes/weeding them out.

Below is a quick view on the themes I have in mind:

Beauty and the Beast

Fairytales have always been big for me. Plus this is the only Disney princess who’s smart and kicks ass. For this theme I’m picturing a fairytalesque winter wedding with a lot of white and dark reds.

Lord of the Rings

The fiancé and I have spent many weekends watching all three Lord of the Rings movies. Think outdoors forest with a lot of silver and flowy dresses. Another plus is that my second ring will be lotr inspired and we’re hoping to do our honeymoon in New Zealand.

Alice in Wonderland

One of my favorite books (along with Peter Pan and Little Princess which the fiance already vetoed). The brunt of the inspiration will be from the Tim Burton movie (I loved how visually appealing Wonderland was). However, I do want a lot of touches from the books and the musical.

Across the Universe

Across the Universe (Beatles songs)

We watched the movie Across the Universe as our first date. Because of that, the proposal was very Across the Universe inspired with Beatles music and the actual proposal being “Hey Jude” reworked (I’ll do my full engagement story in a later post). Because of that I love the idea of having the wedding theme tie-in with the rest of our relationship.

The Simpsons

The Simpsons

I think one of the first “he’s my soul mate” moments was when we realize that our Simpsons collection matched up perfectly. I had seasons 1, 3, 9, and 10 and he had 2, 4, 5, and 7. When we realized we had no overlapping seasons for our favorite TV show, we bought seasons 6 and 8 together. It was a perfect nerd romance story.  If we go through with this theme, I want to avoid a cartoony wedding and want it to be Simpsons inspired instead. (i.e. a saxophone for Lisa, land of chocolate for Homer, etc).

Everyone I talk to about my themes have pretty strong opinions about which ones they like/hate. What are your thoughts?

Once Upon a Blog…

I have a family of bloggers. Pet blogs, music blogs, fashion blogs, life blogs… we do it all. But I’ve never been interested enough to read/participate in the community. Now that I’ve been engaged for over 6 months and have done nothing to plan the wedding, I figure a blog will be a good way to keep myself motivated and on track. It’s not that I’m not excited to be married. The marriage I can do. It’s the actual wedding planning that I can’t seem to get myself to be excited about. Most girls dream of their wedding… it just so happens that my dream wedding is not possible.

What my dream wedding would be: snow. I love snow as much as I love fairy tales. Growing up in the Chicago suburbs you always have snow in the winter. The shimmering powder reminded me of the fairytale lands I would read about in my books. So after I spent a few weeks in the city of Bern in Switzerland during junior high I found my dream venue. I would get married on a mountain in Switzerland surrounded by snow and in the warm sun. I would fly everyone out for an entire week (fully paid by my rich future husband) and spend the whole time having fun and celebrating. Now that I’m grown up, I know that money is a factor and that my dream is not at all possible. Plus the fiancé is a PhD student so that whole rich future-husband didn’t exactly work out.

Now that I’m actually planning my wedding, I’ll start off with a few disclaimers. I have no idea how to plan a wedding and when I’m at weddings I’m the person not paying attention. Therefore, this is completely a new experience for me. Also, I am the strangest person when it comes to planning. I think it might be my ADD (I discovered I have pretty severe ADHD junior year of high school but hate taking my medicine).  For example, I picked out my hair accessory for prom and decided on the dress based on what would match.

So hopefully there will be people giving advice and helping me figure out what I’m doing during my 1-4 year planning journey…
